Under the Mountain Film Review :

I attended the North American Premiere of "Under the Mountain" at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. The film is a love song to New Zealand's volcanoes. Jonathan King's fantasy tale is "Lord of the Rings" meets "Alien" -- it may be a bit scary for younger kids, though.
Sam Neill does a star turn here as an aging wizard-like Fagan. Only he has the knowledge to help save the world from the evil Gargantua. But it's up to teenage twins Theo and Rachel (young newcomers Tom Cameron and Sophie McBride) to wield the power. The charming kids steal the show here and couldn't be more engaging. The multi-layered story more than held my interest -- there's plenty here for adults and youth alike. Production values are stellar with mind-boggling visual and special effects, and "Under the Mountain" boasts one of the best scores I've heard in a long time. The lush cinematography amounts to a New Zealand travelogue.

The film is dazzling and puts many others of its ilk to shame. "Under the Mountain" should do well among family audiences.

The Misfortunates Movie Review :

I attended the North American Premiere of "The Misfortunates" at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. Director Felix van Groeningen introduced the film with a few caveats about the drunkenness and debauchery to come. He was correct. The film is filled with humor and pathos, presenting some painfully brutal characterizations of life in Belgium for a 13-year-old boy living in a house of alcoholics. Equal parts comedy and tragedy, "The Misfortunates" can be painful to watch at times but the payoff is worth it. Shot cinema verité style, the artful use of color and texture combined with copious amounts of bawdy humor make this film an audience favorite.


Looking to grow up amid the fumes, vomit and stench of stale beer is 13-year-old Gunther (Kenneth Vanbaeden), the son of Marcel (De Graeve). As in the novel, this narrator is more of an observer than an active participant as he tries to discover what being family means -- even if his relatives make the Beverly Hillbillies look well-adjusted.
Triggering this search is a crisis in the boy's life some 14 years on, when Gunther, now an aspiring novelist (Valentijn Dhaenens), is about to become a father himself. Pic slides smoothly between the late '80s and early 2000s, and the narrative jumble is nimbly edited by Nico Leunen.


Van Groeningen uses an anecdotal, vignettish approach that underlines Gunther's search for connecting themes, rather than a desire to paint psychologically refined portraits of characters who are anything but. The director also applies this to the visuals, which effortlessly mix a variety of styles, suggesting the effects of hindsight and memory.
Ace d.p. Ruben Impens fully exploits the possibilities of his Red One digital camera, evoking everything from saturated film stock to playful black-and-white to crystalline contempo lensing.
Like the novel, "The Misfortunates" starts out as an extremely lowbrow comedy (highlights include several variations on beer-drinking contests) but morphs into a bittersweet meditation on whether familial love and pride are enough to sustain a proper upbringing.
Thesping is appropriately brawny, with De Graeve's loose-canon father emotionally anchoring the picture; only legit vet De Bal seems out of her depth. Production and costume design are spot-on, and Jef Neve's score nicely enhances the various moods.
Pic's international moniker replaces the equally awkward earlier translation "The Alasness of Things," which was a closer approximation of the novel's original title.

Skeleton Crew Hollywood Movie Review :

I am not a movie critic just a normal person that likes good movies. This movie is really really bad, the acting is bad the plot is bad and also the story line. They tried to get people attention showing some nude scenes but even those scenes are bad. This movie it's about a Crew that is making a movie, about a crazy Doctor that torture and murder patients on a mental institution.


The movie they shooting sucks apparently in real life; then the director goes nuts after finding some real films that were made by the actual doctor that kills all that people, then the movie director becomes a killer just like the dead crazy doctor and his crew becomes part of a new movie. It has some gore and bloody scenes but they are not really well done. Just don't waste your time watching this movie.

The film opens up on a dark stormy night when a young couple get in to a terrible crash. The girl goes for help at a mental institution since it’s the first place she sees. They take her in, the doctors care for her and her boyfriend, but she is stuck there overnight. In the morning a bus will come and she will be able to go back in to town. Dr. Andersson (Yoken) is very firm about no one walking around the halls though. He claims it is because there are murderers and rapists here, but when she finds her boyfriend, bloody and tortured, she learns that her safety is the furthest thing from the doctor’s mind. Now she is on the hit list who many innocent patients have already been crossed off of. And….Cut! The camera pulls out and a film set is revealed.
There have been a number of technical errors while shooting and soon the director, Steven (Porter), begins noticing more and more problems. He complains that what he see’s is simply not real enough. Vettaikkaaran (Tamil: வேட்டைக்காரன்) is a forthcoming Tamil feature film directed by débutante film director Babu Sivan. The film is produced by M. Balasubramanian and B. Gurunath Meiyappan. The film will star Vijay and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles. The film's background score and soundtrack will be composed by Vijay Antony while Gopinath will be the film's main cinematographer and V. T. Vijayan as the film's editor. A Town Called Panic English Film Review :

(In French, 75 min.) This feature-length stop-motion animation that appeared at Cannes is based on the Belgian TV series by Stephane Auber and Vincent Patar. It's a film all made up using tiny figurines to tell the story of a journey to the center of the earth whre a parallel society of pointy-headed and dishonest creatures reigns. Voices of French actors Jeanne Balibar (The Duchess of Langeais) and Benoît Poelvoorde (of Man Bites Dog) are heard. The filmmakers revel in the jerkiness of the figures in (stop) motion.
You might not know this is the same stop-motion technique used in Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox. Auber and Patar have collaborated ( and voice two main characters) in a film that's not only simpler and more primitive in effect (figures even have little stands on the bottom like plaster toys) but more truly uniquely for children. Clearly this cast and crew had more modest means and objectives and motives. They didn't get glamorous superstars to voice the parts and they worked visibly from scratch, bringing to life recreations of kids' little Plasticine toys, a typically mismatched collection including a horse, an Indian, a cowboy, mechanical tractors, a piano lesson, and moving them around on surfaces that could be a village, or could be a train set or a display under a Christmas tree.
These are actually spin-offs from a TV series that Belgian, French, and maybe French Canadian kids would know. They were featured in five-minute films on the arty but widely watched French TV outlet Canal Plus and later dubbed by "Wallace and Gromit" producer Aardman Animations for export to other outlets such as Nicktoons in the U.S.; they can be found on YouTube.
The Town Called Panic effect is much more boldly artificial and crude than the stuffed but charming furry creatures in Wes Anderson's film. This is a thing of slapstick and chases, upended figures and screeches and scrambles. "An antic little joy ride," the Variety reviewer has called it, and that's about right. Shown November 13 at the San Francisco Film Society's 4th Annual Animation Festivial as one of three animated features (the others: Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr.Fox and Tarik Saleh's Metropia), it enjoyed a preview at Film Forum in New York the following week, and begins a limited US theatrical release at Film Forum December 16. This is not a movie to miss if you hear of it coming to a convention or festival near you. See it for free before you have to pay for it! There are many types of film fanatics that should love this movie. It can be compared to so many different types of films and film makers. All Sci-Fi fans should like the film because of the alternate realities/parallel universe themes. You will also notice the film takes on a very non-linear plot. For some, this is confusing. However, it only adds to the delight of watching this film. This non-linear film making reminds me of films by Quentin Tarantino. This film could certainly be one that can viewed multiple times and enjoyed over and over.
This film was originally shot in color and then desaturated in post production. The black and white or "noir" aspect of the film adds its own personality. Color would not have worked for this film because it has a 1940-1950's "Bogart" theme to it. You see Hoyle play the part of the investigator playing the part of the crime detective so well. She plays it as a female; which no doubt, offers a refreshing way to see a detective role played.
The convention I attended was the first Con for me. When I saw the Films listed I read more about this film and it looked very interesting. It met and beat all my expectations. I had the chance to meet Chase Masterson playing the Singer and Director James Kerwin. There was a great panel on the film and many questions were answered. The Vicious Kind Hollywood movie Review :

In a lot of ways this feels like a some what darker version of Dan In Real life. Caleb (Adam Scott) picks up his little brother Peter (Alex Frost) and his new girlfriend Emma (Brittany Snow) for Thanksgiving. It becomes clear that Caleb is dealing with some raging emotional issues. About his ex-girlfriend and his dad Donald (J.K. Simmons)who tends to have issues of his own. Caleb starts to grow infatuated with Emma to the point of almost breaking sanity.
I"m not going to spoil the film so I am going to keep my feelings short. By no means is the story original,but the acting was good enough to enjoy it. I think Adam Scott played his role well. As well as Brittany . Got to give it up for J.K. Simmons! That guy rocks at playing dad's . The weakest acted role in my opinion was by Alex Frost. Not saying it was bad! Just not as strong as the others. He played a great bully in Drillbit Taylor though ill give him that. I give it an 8 out of 10! The film is loosely based on the true story of a San Diego man who acts out a Sophocles play in his mind and kills his mother with a sword .Based on a harrowing true story centered around policeman Hank (Willem Dafoe), who is called to a bungalow in a respectable San Diego neighborhood where a man named Brad (Michael Shannon) has barricaded himself in his house and taken two hostages. Across the street, Brad's mother (Grace Zabriskie) lies dead, found sprawled in a pool of blood, the victim ofa sword wound. The son is suspected of the murder. As Hank uneasily prowls the sunlit street outside the bungalow, a string of Brad's friends arrive on the scene, among them his girlfriend and a director pal.
Slowly the bizarre pieces of the story are placed in front of the cop, who tries to make sense of it all. Not only has the suspected murderer never been the same since he returned from a kayaking trip to Peru, but he also seems to be suffering from a strange mother complex. To deepen the psychosis even further, Brad has been rehearsing one of Sophocles' plays that has a lot to do with mothers!

In a series of flashbacks, the bizarre story of Brad Macallam begins to emerge. After an ill-fated white-water kayaking trip in a distant land, Brad finds readjustment to suburban life increasingly difficult. As his disaffection grows and his relations with those around him become strained, he glimpses a world more vivid and strangely frightening than others can see. The detectives try to penetrate the mystery of his story, but the questions only multiply


My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done English Film Review :

So this was my first time going to the Toronto international film festival, and i have to say, it was a very lame experience. I went to see this film because i love David lynch and i heard he was involved with it, the actors seemed very good, and the trailer seemed compelling. With all honesty, it was boring, weird, and the storyline was plain awful. The only 'positives' to it, was that there were a few laughs here and there, and the end credits, cause i was glad when it ended. I almost fell asleep, and everyone in the theatre seemed to hate it. Don't expect an ending that will shock you, cause there isn't anything at all. What you can expect is a a pointless story with a weird vision behind it. The acting was good, but it had nothing to back it up. So please, save your money, don't go see this movie. I usually hate people who write that in the reviews, so if your like me, than go see it and i dare you to say I was wrong.


The real life story of the film has all the makings of a grand drama. No wonder Herzog gravitated toward it. Hank Havenhurst (Willem Dafoe, in a wasted performance) is called to investigate a murder in a quiet San Diego suburb. The facts are confusing and disconnected; the suspect is contradictory. Havenhurst bumbles his way through the investigation.
A woman lies dead in a pool of blood; her son has stabbed her with a sword in broad daylight. Brad (Michael Shannon), is now barricaded in the home he shared with mom, alternately threatening more murder and mayhem, and sending out arcane signals.

Brad’s fiancé and his friend arrive and slowly fill in the back story. This information is presented piecemeal; Herzog’s style in this film is fitful at best. This simplistic presentation of details lasts too long to add up to anything tangible—never mind building the suspense needed for a thriller.
Equally disruptive is Herzog’s continual referencing of his own body of work throughout the film. The references don’t really advance any essential elements like plot or character or theme, they just appear as witty asides. Besides, in terms of his own filmic practice,Herzog presents nothing new here: he seems content to continue resting on his laurels, yet again (remember Rescue Dawn?) Male Bille Kannada Music review:

Raising rainbow hardly sounds like Sax (as credited) and has a stark Chinese folk feel to it. Malebille instrumental theme, however, has brilliant sax by Kadri, with excellent background arrangements. With its commercial hip-hop’ish sound, Raghu Dixit’s Sidukabyada panders to the more massy sound, but the composer hits the bulls-eye in the two melodies, Naanu ninna and Chandamama chandamama – Karthik and Haricharan’s vocals working really well, respectively.
The drunken revelry in Shankara shivashankara is worth a few laughs, but the pathos-soaked title song drags endlessly. Malebille’s soundtrack is engaging in places, but is no patch on Manikanth’s Telugu soundtracks.

Male Bille Kannada Film Review :

Reputed director Mahesh Sukhadhare in his comeback film seems to have lost touch of a commercial cinema. The first half is a sheer waste and he makes it like a novice. There is not even a single scene that is different or original. A tight screenplay and good story is what is lacking in this Sukhadhare film.



Anand (Akshay) and Anjali (Pragnya), students appearing for CET exams are poles apart in attitudes. In the wake of love affair in Anand he goes on to help Anjali in various ways creating pranks. Anjali has her goals firm in becoming a software engineer and around this time Anand becomes a car salesman. Anjali falls in love with her boss Akash (Diganth) and gets ready for marriage.
What the audience would have realized early in the film is now revealed by the director. Anand has made a big sacrifice and it has not come to the knowledge of Anjali. What is the sacrifice? It is revealed via the suspense element in the climax.
Debutant Akshay as Anand is quite OK. Pragna has the right role for her. Diganth is used for the publicity purposes and he is in a guest role. Doddanna and Ramakrishna have done neat job in the supporting roles.


There are two lovely songs scored by Manikanth Khadri. The doyen in Saxophone Khadri Gopalanath has lent a small tune in this film. Ravana Kannada Film The Story :

Ravana in this movie Vinod (Yogish), who has grown up under the care of a church father (Dwarakish), is an introvert but a genius. He is forcibly sent to college by the father but is a complete misfit in class. Though shunned by the rest of his class, Divya (Sanchita Padukone) becomes his friend and he gradually warms up to her too.

His feelings soon turn into love but he realizes that Divya considers him as only a friend. But he is unwilling to let her go. Meanwhile Vinod learns that Divya is in love with another classmate, Aadhi (Santhosh).Divya's father (Srenivas Murthy) is angered on learning about her love. He shuts her up and prevents her from contacting anyone. But Vinod comes and meets her on the pretext of getting some old clothes for himself to wear. Pitied by Vinod, her father allows him. But Vinod uses the chance and escapes with Divya. He convinces her that she will meet Aadhi at Ooty.
While Divya clutches a tree bark tightly, Vinod and Aadhi slip out and barely manage to hold either of her hands. Divya is forced to a situation where she needs to choose between her boyfriend and friend. Aadhi's pleas notwithstanding, Divya doesn't have the heart to kill Vinod. The climax gives a touching end to story.

Ravana Kannada Mysowood Movie Review :

Earlier, it was reported that actor Yogish looked like Tamil actor Dhanush. That’s why all his hit movies would be remade in Kannada and Yogi will be the hero. Now, director Yogish Hunasur has has made his effort in that direction. According to the local tastes, he has remade the Tamil film Kadhal Kondein in Kannada.
The movie Ravana is a triangular love story. The first half of the movie Ravana is quite dragging and bores the audiences. But the second half has got necessary twists and turns to create interest among the audiences. The climax could have been even more interesting if the editor had given little more work to his scissor.

Vinod (Yogish) is an orphan, intelligent and introvert guy and he studies engineering. He falls in love with his classmate Divya (Sanchita Padukone). To convince his love, he goes to help her. Meanwhile, she falls in love with her boyfriend Aadi (Santosh). Vinod's fate takes its toll on him and he is charged with murder and is branded psychopath. What happens next will form the climax.


Yogish has given wonderful performance, but he seems to have struggled to do justice to his role. Sanchita Padukone’s character is a tailor-made role. She makes magic through her eyes and steals the show in her debut film. Even Santosh, Shrinivas Murthy and Ninasam Ashwath have done justice to their respective roles.
Abhiman Roy’s music is another highlight of the movie. He has scored a few melodious numbers and the songs like ‘Tappanguchi….’ and ‘Chakli and Nippattus… impress the audiences. 5. La La Lahirey
It is almost in a fast-forward motion as Sunitha Sarathy and Venu go for the jugular. The rhythms fallon your ears like rains on a tile roof — too loud with a predictable patter.



6. Naatho Vastava
Udit Narayan has a quaint approach to Telugu songs. There should be some reason for Telugu music directors to go for him despite his atrocious pronunciation. You listen to this number, you will understand why. He waltzes through the various octaves. There is a felicity to his approach. In the company of the talented Sumangali, Udit is even more reliable. The female singer too has an easy style and comes off fluently. The instrumentation again is loud. The shooting took place at various locations, including an old bungalow at Althara junction near Guruvayur, Thrissur. Keralotsavam 2009 promises to be an entertainer-cum-suspense thriller, produced by Grace International.

hough Rajiv had to utilise the film as a launch pad, it is Gayatri who took the cake with good footage all through the film. The story of the film had the scent of ‘Gangotri and Chanti’ films.

However, the director changed the track in the second half and got a grip over the film. The old-fashioned screenplay and slow pace of direction sans masala or action scenes killed the patience of audiences.

Raju (Rajiv) turns an orphan with the death of his mother (Surekhavani). The village elder and his wife take him away and bring him up along with their daughter Nandini (Gayatri). Both remain good friends right from their childhood. Nandini falls in love with Raju and reveals it to Raju. But he politely refuses her.

Nandini teases Raju in many ways but he silently escapes every time. Nandini’s father looks for an alliance for Nandini. Even as Nandini reveals to her father that she is in love with someone, he did not accept it.

Nandini goes to Raju’s hut and gives her notebook, in which she writes down her opinion on him and asks him to write his opinion on her before the sunrise next day as Nandini’s father fixes her engagement with some boy the next day.
