"Saw Vi" - Synopsis

Saw VI Hollywood Movie Review:
Saw VI is the sixth installment in the Saw film series. The story continues after the events of "Saw V", where detective Mark Hoffman walks out of the glass box and leaves no trails leading to him as Agent Strahm's murderer.
Forensics have yet to discover Strahm and his missing body when a young teenager is found to be the latest survivor of the Jigsaw games. To Hoffman's surprize, he claims that Jigsaw could not have tested the boy, since he knows he did not test him himself. The survivor, known as Garett, reveals the circumatances of his trap to Hoffman, who interrogates him.
At this point, Hoffman is shocked to find Garett was targeted, even though Garett did nothing wrong in his life to make him a candidate for being "tested". Fearing that he may make himself too obvious or that Garett could soon discover his secret, Hoffman throws him into a vast game in which hopefully his secret will die with Garett. I’ll be showing Mira Nair’s Amelia at Sneak Previews this week. I’ve seen the biopic of the vanished aviatrix Amelia Earhart, which stars Oscar magnet Hilary Swank and Richard Gere, and look forward to grilling the screenwriters, Ron Bass (Rain Man) and Anna Hamilton Phelan (Gorillas in the Mist). The question at hand: how do you tackle a movie biography these days, when authenticity is at such a premium?

Darren Shan is a regular teenage kid. He and his friend Steve find out about a Freak Show coming to town an work hard at trying to find tickets. They do, and together they go to "Cirque du Freak" where they see many strange acts including a wolf-man and a bearded lady. Steve and Darren think that it is all a joke until a vampire, Larten Crepsley comes on with a very poisonous spider that he makes do tricks. When Steve sees this man he freaks out a bit but won't tell Darren why. After the show, Steve tells Darren to go home, and that he will follow later. Darren says yes but instead sneaks upstairs to see what Steve is up to. He sees Steve talking to Mr. Crepsley and overhears their conversation. Steve tells Mr. Crepsley that he knows that his real name is Vur Horston an is a Vampire and he tells Larten that he would like to join him and become an apprentice. Mr Crepsley says he must test Steve before he agrees, and when he does he reveals that Steve has "bad blood" and he will not transform him. Steve becomes angry but Darren leaves the theatre and doesn't see what happen next. Darren goes home and thinks about what Steve did but also cannot stop thinking about Mr. Crepsley's Spider.
Cirque Du Freak: the Vampire's Assistant" Hollywood Movie Review:
The next day he steals the spider with the hopes that he will be able to make it perform tricks too. Meanwhile, Steve is acting as if nothing happened. Darren manages to train the spider by using a flute to hypnotize it (what Larten did). Darren invites Steve over to show him the spider, but when Darren is making it perform tricks on Steve, Darren's sister comes in and breaks the noise, and thus causes the spider to bite Steve. Steve becomes very ill, and is rushed to the hospital where the doctors say that there is nothing they can do. Darren decides to see Mr. Crepsley about the possibility of an antidote. The vampire agrees to give him the only cure if Darren agrees to become his assistant, and half vampire. He does. Steve gets better but starts to realize that Darren is now part vampire and becomes angry, jealous and betrayed. Larten stages Darren's death and Darren is burried. Mr. Crepsley comes to dig up Darren and leave. He does and gives Darren a moment to say goodbye to his hometown. Then Steve shows up and tells Darren about all he knows. He says that Darren and Mr. Crepsley were planning the betrayal all along and that Steve doesn't really have bad blood, which Darren knows is not true. He tries to explain about the spider, but Steve cuts a small cross into the flesh of his left palm and swears on his blood that he will kill Darren and his mentor Mr. Crepsley. Darren shakes off the warning and leaves with Mr. Crepsley. It is important to note that in this story, vampires are not evil creatures. They never kill when they feed, do not bit in order to transform others, and do not have an evil purpose in life.
And Just so you know. The vampires in this movies aren't those, fanged creatures who cant go into the light, or who can turn into bats or anything like that stereo-type crap. It is more realistic. Like how they don't live forever, they just age real slowly. They don't suck blood through their teeth, they cut open a vein, suck a bit of blood then heal the wound with their spit. They can go into sunlight but not forever because they can get burnt real easily.
Also note that if the film is the content of the first three books it may be created as a stand alone movie, however there could be up to three sequels as the saga consisted of twelve books split into 4 trilogies, they could all easily be put into 4 films of the separate trilogies and flow well together

Movie Review:
In our ever changing society, video games and their respective consoles have been upgrading themselves rapidly. Long gone are the days of the Sega 16-Bit consoles with bulky game cartridges and the Nintendo Gameboy and this has been fast replaced by the likes of the Wii, the third incarnation of the Playstation and even the PSP. On the computer, first shooter games like Doom have also evolved and the likes of Counterstrike and Left 4 Dead allows players to play with other players on other computers around the world. So, where does the movie Gamer fit in into all this? Gamer takes us many steps ahead when the game player can control a game character, who happens to be a living, breathing human being.
Intriguing premise? Certainly. Great movie? Certainly not. In the world of Gamer, a man by the name of Ken Castle has developed a technology that allows people to pay to control other people’s lives in a fantasy world and people can also be paid to become these characters and allow themselves to be controlled in the context of a game. As a result, his highly successful model, Society (something like The Sims) is a bonafide hit and Castle becomes even richer than Bill Gates. He soon comes up with a new game, Slayers and this one becomes an even bigger sensation. Allowing men on death row and rejects of society to sign up, Castle extracts these men from the prison system (with the Governement’s cooperation he says) and Slayers becomes everyone’s worse nightmare come true. It is a first-person shooter game where as mentioned earlier; the gamer controls the character, a real human being who has to fight to survive while being watched by people around the world.
The movie, made by the same contorted minds behind both Crank movies is unfortunately, not at their best here. The style is there (causing one too many headaches too) but the wit is lacking and the story, which has so much potential is blah. There’s a scene involving Vodka, human waste and the gas tank of a truck that is typical Nevedine/Taylor but they go as far as that. The bulk of the movie revolves around Kable (Gerard Butler), a character who is nearing his release from the game (this will happen if a character wins 30 battles) and his chance at redemption. Throw in a light dose of how he was not meant to be there in the first place and that’s Gamer for you. A lot of touch and go and a not a whole lot of meaning.
Gerard Butler is at the forefront of this movie and after 300, it’s no surprise that he is able to handle a movie of this kind with its action and what not but at the same time, it is also nothing too impressive. Also, he is surrounded by a good cast of people in the likes of Alison Lohman, John Leguizamo, Ludacris to name a few but they are all a jolly good waste of talent. It is a wonder why they would have signed up for such an outing when they have fared much much better.
Truth is, it is pretty easy to leave the cinema feeling somewhat shortchanged by the whole experience. I mean, yes, it is probably a movie that is meant for leaving your brains at the door but there is a lot of material inside that could have been explored but the filmmakers chose not to and that is probably the thing that irks me the most.
So, if you are looking for a generous amount of blood, explosions, random tits in a movie that is great for a bunch of army buddies on a nights off or a guy outing thing, this might be a good choice. Otherwise, just stick to LAN gaming .

"fag hag" and (hetero-)sexual carnivore Tiffani, who comes across more as an old-school drag queen than a biological female. (The thesp's comedic timing deserves a better showcase.) Viewers who make it past the dreadful opening funeral-parlor scenes get to see Tiffani's initially disastrous attempts to match new-kid-in-town Casey (Daniel Skelton) and local hunk Zack (Chris Salvatore). They're eventually righted in a decent equivalent to the first "Eating Out's" standout phone-sex setpiece. Scattered quotable quips aside, the script panders to its target aud via zero-body-fat casting and routine campy sensibility. But thesps and first-time feature helmer Glenn Gaylord modestly elevate matters when the material allows. Brief full-frontal views suggest MPAA rating isn't a goal.

The film was in Vietnamese with English subtitles, and takes place in the present day Saigon and Southern California. The central characters are Khang, a spoiled playboy son of a business tycoon, and Hieu, the studious and serious devoted son. Khang and Hieu go to SoCal to study and the experience changes both. Khang falls in love with the sexy Viet-American policewoman when she saves his life, then books him for DUI. His father cuts off his funding and he gets a menial job to support himself and win the policewoman’s respect. Exorcist II: The Heretic the sequel to the 1973 film The Exorcist. Dr. Gene Tuskin works with troubled children, perhaps none more troubled than Regan MacNeil, who suffers from bad dreams and repressed memories. The memories she represses are of the time she was possessed by a demon.
Dr. Tuskin's invention, a device that hypnotizes two persons and links their minds together, reveals that the demon, named Pazuzu, still lurks within her. It is desperate to emerge again and wreak havoc. Meanwhile, Father Philip Lamont is ordered by his cardinal to investigate the death of Father Merrin, the priest who died while performing an exorcism on Regan.
Father Lamont undertakes his task reluctantly. He feels unworthy of his assignment. He also feels that Evil is literally an entity and that this entity is winning the battle over Good. His investigation takes him to Africa where he locates another recipient of Merrin's exorcising and learns something fascinating and terrible about locusts
After The Exorcist, with its genuinely shocking material (back in 1973, at least), there really wasn't anywhere to go. And no sequel was attempted for another four years, until 1977's The Exorcist 2: The Heretic. And while Exorcist 1 was a scorcher, this one's a stinker.
We meet Regan (Linda Blair, now a filled-out young teenager) only semi-aware of the horror who'd taken possession of her innocent body when she was just 12. She is living proof of the old maxim 'what you don't know won't hurt you', because her travelling mum has left her in the clutches of crazy psychiatrist (there's a tautology for you!) Dr Gene Tuskin (Louise Fletcher). And the mad doctor wants her to remember...
Sure enough, Dr Gene succeeds in re-awakening the horror. Only the heretical Catholic priest Father Lamont (Richard Burton) can stand between little Linda and the demon.
Now this movie does have some genuinely good actors. Linda Blair does a pretty good job reprising her earlier role, and Richard Burton, James Earl Jones as an African scientist and deep demon-enemy, and Max von Sydow are no slouches in the acting stakes. And all of those actors are able to put in patches of competent work.
But the script is so laughable, with the plot based on an unbelievable science-fiction premise which would not have been out of place in a 'Thrilling Wonder Stories' magazine of the 1920s, and the direction is so risible, with John Boorman showing himself to be totally out of his shallow depth, that the story never takes wing. There are some good special effects, but they're placed in a context which makes them just plain humorous.
Much of the time James Earl Jones seems to be about to burst into laughter while essaying his role. And Richard Burton, while good in patches, does sleep-walk much of the time, reading his lines in a broken fashion as if he was a victim of a Haiitian witch-doctor. John Boohrman can't take all of the credit for making this movie such a dog. Louise Fletcher as the deranged psychiatrist Dr Tuskin is totally appalling. Now, she has acting credits a metre long, including an acclaimed appearance as Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. But if you were to judge her by this performance, you'd swear she'd never acted before, and would never act again. As an actress, she'd make a great picket-fence.

Not even the sight of Paul Henreid as Father Lamont's Cardinal can make up for Louise Fletcher's presence. She, not Regan, should have been exorcised on the spot. But I fear not even that would have saved this movie - though I've got to confess I found it pretty amusing at times, with a few scenes I will always treasure

The film takes place over the course of a single day, as Eliza (Uma Thurman) looks after her two young children while struggling to hang on to her own identity as an aspiring writer. Her husband (Anthony Edwards) is preoccupied with his own less-than-stellar career, and her pregnant best friend (Minnie Driver) also needs her attention and advice.
The film has little new to say about the pressures of trying to juggle personal ambition and familial needs, but what makes this outing worthwhile are the vivid details of trying to fight these battles in New York in 2009. Eliza encounters plenty of other frazzled moms on the playground where some people come to spot celebrities. (Jodie Foster has a hilarious cameo as another mom being stalked by paparazzi.) All of the vignettes concerning rude neighbors, cramped apartments and parking nightmares are so well caught that we feel ourselves immersed in Eliza's maddening routines.

Dieckmann seems aware that Eliza can seem a bit self-indulgent in her carping. An older neighbor comments at one point that women of an earlier generation dealt with the same pressures but never dreamt of complaining, and her remark seems apt. But Thurman brings a lot of grace and conviction to her portrayal, and Edwards makes an engaging foil. The movie's highlight is a scene with a minor character: an Indian messenger (played by charismatic newcomer Arjun Gupta) who strikes some sexual sparks with the bedraggled Eliza. His frenzied dance with Thurman is almost as memorable as her famous dance scene with John Travolta in "Pulp Fiction.

SINGAPORE : Singapore director Glen Goei’s latest film “The Blue Mansion” revolves around the quirky story of an eccentric extended family in the middle of a murder mystery. Though it features several big names in the local theatre scene such as Lim Kay Siu, Emma Yong, Pam Oei and Adrian Pang, the movie's main star however, is the mansion itself where the story is set. Filmed on location at the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in Penang, the UNESCO heritage site has proven to be a character of its own in the movie, according to Goei who described its feng shui as "very good". The house definitely has an atmosphere and every scene takes places in the house.”
Actress Emma Yong who stars in the movie added, “I think the house welcomed us. It felt like it was happy to have us there.” Goei told Primetime Morning that the idea for the film, his first in 11 years, came about after he had attended a funeral wake of his friend’s mother ten years ago. I was watching the going-ins and the going-outs over three days. It was hilarious, the aunties and uncles giving advice, there were cousins running around. There were strangers from all walks of life whom my friends had never seen before. So I just felt it was a situation for a melodramatic soap opera. I thought it was a great concept for a film.”
He chose to film at the blue mansion after search attempts for an old, colonial mansion in Singapore resulted in none. Malaysia was their next option and a house was eventually found in Penang. The house was built in 1890 by a wealthy Chinese business man and had 16 bedrooms for his eight wives and their families, said Goei. It belonged to the family up to about 15 years ago when it was sold to the current owner who is a well-known architect in Penang who believes very much in conservation. He preserved the house and it won a UNESCO architectural heritage conervation award."
Yong clearly enjoyed her filming experience despite it being her first movie role. She attributed it to the fact that the cast has known each other for many years and compared it to a “huge family outing” for them. Being in the mansion which had an “electric” atmosphere, Yong said that they felt very at home there while filming. Besides the local cast, an international crew was also behind the film. Goei thought the “unusual” story and script was what attracted the foreign crew to work with them.
As non-locals, they brought along different perspectives which was exactly what Goei wanted. The film is in English, even though it’s a local film. And it’s about a family who are very anglophile. So I wanted that western perspective that they gave. It’s very much a film noir in the old traditional sense." On the film’s combination of different genres, Yong said she loved the script when she first read it. “It’s a little bit family drama, a little bit murder mystery, a little bit revenge tragedy, a lot of different elements all in it. So I think it’s quite rich and multi layered.”
And Yong isn't the only one who's impressed. “The Blue Mansion” has won a place in the prestigious Pusan International Film Festival where it will make its world premiere on October 10. The film opens in Singapore theatres on October 22.

Black Dynamite film Review
This film reduced me to tears of laughter. I've just returned home from seeing it at the Edinburgh film festival and can honestly say this is one of the best movies i've seen this year. I could just list all of the best bits of the movie in this review, but i'd rather you all just went to see it for yourselves.
As a parody/homage of the blaxploitation movies of the 70's, this is perfect. If I didn't know better, i'd think this was actually made in the 70's. Its full of cool little details, the decor, the fashion, the hair styles, the Isaac Hayes/Curtis mayfield style music that details the plot in the lyrics (sometimes scene specific), the grainy picture and the intentionally dodgy camera-work, crash zooms, boom mics in shot etc. During the fight scenes, Michael jai white's kung fu yell is a spot on impersonation of Jim Kelly's (he of Enter the Dragon fame).
Like all the best spoofs, all the actors play it completely straight. White is perfectly cast as Black Dynamite, and if there is any justice in the world, this movie will make him a star. I can almost imagine Samuel L playing this part, but I doubt he could have played it as well as white did. The scene that crystallised his performance for me, was when, during a long speech, a boom mic pops in to shot right next to his face. During the scene, the cameraman is continually trying to adjust the shot to hide the mic. Dynamite continues with his speech as if nothing is going on, but just before he is finished talking, he quickly glances at it, then finishes his speech. The way he plays it is perfect and had everyone in the cinema in fits of laughter.
I said earlier that this is the best spoof since airplane, but I actually think this may be better. In airplane, the jokes were quickfire, but hit and miss, but in black dynamite, every joke hits its mark, and its just as quickfire as airplane. The tone is set pretty quick ( when an undercover agent is caught out cos he cant talk jive properly) and doesn't let up until the credits have rolled. I was still laughing hours after I left the cinema just thinking about it.
Watching this made me wonder how the Austin powers films were such big hits. They were a similar kind of parody but nowhere near as funny, and at the end of the day, aside from a couple of amusing cameos, a one man show (and not a very good one at that). If this doesn't at least do Austin powers numbers, I will be very disappointed, as it deserves the success. Very rarely does a film make me laugh so hard I cry, and this movie did it several times, and its not just me, I think everyone in the cinema had the same experience. Go and see this first chance you get, I cant recommend it enough.

I had a choice to see one of two Fantasia films playing at the same time: A Gay American Werewolf In London or Lesbian Vampire Killers. I went with the latter because: 1) The first movie doesn’t exist, and 2) I’m a sucker for catchy titles. However, horror films, like porno flicks, with memorable monikers usually don’t live up to their names. But Lesbian Vampire Killers (which screened at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival this month) does—and not in all the ways you would expect. I was anticipating a bunch of girl-on-girl action with topless, bloodsucking lesbian ladies engaging in titillatingly licentious and raunchy sexual and violent acts, and while Lvk does have its share of girl-on-girl kissing and bloodletting, director Phil Claydon stays away from profligacy and pornography and instead delivers a crowd-pleasing, entertaining horror-comedy in the vein of Shaun Of The Dead.
Just based on the title alone, you can tell the movie Lesbian Vampire Killers isn't so much a film as a calling card, a promise that the people behind this madness will bring you the exploitation goods should you choose to hire them. And for the movie's director Phil Claydon, the gambit worked.
He's been hired to direct New Line's Dan Mintner: Badass for Hire, a comedy about an 80s-style vigilante stuck in modern times. This proves easier said than done, when after graduation a mysterious killer goes after the five of them and anyone who knows their secret.
Movie Review:
You know the drill to making these films it is staple to fill the screen with beautiful bodies willing to flaunt their assets, and the opening scenes established everything right going for it, with plenty of hot bods gyrating to senseless music, under the influence of drink, drugs and everybody having sex on their minds. And what more the lead characters here are all females, from relatively better known ones whom you know will have a better chance of survival Rumer Willis (well, the offspring of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore), Jamie Chung (from Dragonball Evolution) and Briana Evigan (Step Up 2 The Streets), to those unceremoniously inserted for gratuitous, passing shots.
It's no wonder as well that the film went horribly wrong right from the start, both in storytelling techniques, and the predicament that the sorority sisters of the Theta-Pi house face from a prank gone morbidly wrong, where one of their own becomes a real corpse, and the rest decide through some strange ritual of voting, and listening to the save-your-own-skin rationalization from ring leader Jessica (Leah Pipes), that they swear to keep that night's event a secret. There's a little integrity tussle between established do-gooder Cassidy (Briana Evigan) and Jessica and the breakdown of the group's solidarity, but otherwise it serves only as an exercise for the audience to know who to trust amongst the bunch of bad hats.
So with most of the characters made unlikable and probably deserve that's due to come to them, it certainly took a long time, some 30 minutes, before one of them fell victim to a cloaked figure utilizing the exact same steel weapon on their demised friend. Trust me this villain will not find any cult longevity to be included in the Great Hall of Infamy. Constant harassment ensued, very much like a cheap knockoff of I Know What You Did Last Summer (well, actually 8 months ago) with the ghoul spooking and dispatching the girls one after another, except that director Stewart Hendler really needed an exercise in building suspense, and keeping things tight through not having villains succumb to the need for monologues with verbatim explanations.
Most scenes of death were averagely designed, and for fans of the genre you'll probably be jaded enough to see some of them coming from a mile away. It played on cliches with all the tricks coming from the same bag. The body count is kept extremely low with some scenes being quiet sterile, and I'm pretty surprised at those who managed to walk into the sunset. Probably the only redeeming grace to make this film slightly bearable to watch would be Carrie Fisher's short supporting role (what was she thinking when she accepted this?) as the protective sorority house-mistress packing a mean shotgun, acting tough and inflicting maximum damage; brings back some memories when she was Rebel Leader, leading a bunch of space jocks, compared to whiny, bitchy supermodel wannabes.
Sorority Row could have been fun while it lasted, but the lacklustre pacing took away most of its shine.

Movie Review:
Surrogacy is all about the great pretend- pretending to be more beautiful, more perfect, more desirable than who you really are. All you need to do is design your ideal self, then recline in your seat at home and use your mind to control your robot avatar. Imagine the possibilities- you may be shy, disfigured, disabled, or even disillusioned (say with your gender) and still be able to live vicariously through your duplicates.
Such a beguiling science-fiction conceit is at the heart of "Surrogates". Though based on the little-known graphic novel by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, it is no doubt inspired by the way people today are living their lives, increasingly dependent upon their computers and other electronic devices and projecting themselves into the world through them. But despite its nifty premise and prescient relevance, "Surrogates" is much less clever than it would seem.
Indeed, what appears to be an intelligent sci-fi thriller mixed with good ol’ Bruce Willis action is in fact a half-baked copy of other far superior films of the genre- its most direct equivalent "I, Robot", right down to casting James Cromwell as the creator of the technology inside. But where its peers have made good on their no-more superior ideas, "Surrogates" is content to wallow in its simplicity, turning what is a rich promising conceit to a one-note exploration of the human condition.
Yes, the human condition. If you believe "Surrogates", everyone rich or poor would soon hide behind their surrogate selves, creating a perfect world without crime, racism or bigotry. In other words, we would be living a lie. Besides the logical lapse of how everyone could afford what looks to be an expensive piece of equipment, there’s also the fallacy of assuming there’d be no human ills just as long as we are free of the constraints of our bodies. Isn’t the mind the root of all evil? And isn’t the mind apparently the control over one’s surrogates?
Were screenwriting duo John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris more imaginative, we’d be more willing to overlook these lapses. But no, it seems the only consequence they could envisage out of such a surrogate-inhabited world is denial. So instead of facing up to the truth of their son’s death, Bruce Willis’ Detective Greer’s wife simply plugs into her surrogate and buries her pain beneath her other self. Really? That’s the worst that could happen?
Squandered away are not just the possibilities that "Surrogates" doesn’t even delve into, but also the limited opportunities that it does flirt with. What about the "Dreads"- actual human beings who reject the idea of surrogacy and live on reservations on the outskirts of the city, their dreadlocked leader The Prophet (Ving Rhames)? Surely it’ll be interesting to see some sort of confrontation more than a street protest told over the TV news.
Or how about that near future populated by our robotic selves? Certainly besides the ability to customize our own robots, there must be some other forms of technology that mankind must have developed. Why then does the world in "Surrogates" look so uncannily like our world now- the cars, the shops and even the computers? Are we supposed to believe that almost every other technology was halted while surrogates were being developed?
But if "Surrogates" isn’t good science-fiction, it’s even worse as an action flick. Reuniting with his "T3: Rise of the Machines" screenwriters, director Johnathan Mostow doesn’t even match up to the serviceable standards of T3. Aside from one foot chase, action junkies will have to wait till the last 20 mins before the already-brief 88-min movie picks up its draggy feet. Even Bruce Willis' usual roguish charisma is absent from this mechanical affair, leaving only to admire how wonderful a job the makeup artists have done in making Willis appear 20 years younger with a blond toupe.
Like surrogacy, "Surrogates" is one great pretend- pretending to be smarter, more exciting and more promising than it really is. Imagine the possibilities that "Surrogates" could have been with its clever premise… and erase all that. This is one ho-hum thriller masquerading as intelligent sci-fi- ultimately a poor substitute for either.

SHORTS is set in the suburb of Black Falls, where all the houses look the same and everyone works for BLACK BOX Unlimited Worldwide Industries Incorporated, whose Mr. Black’s BLACK BOX is the ultimate communication and do-it-all gadget that’s sweeping the nation. Other than keeping his parents employed, however, Mr. Black’s BLACK BOX has done nothing for 11-year-old Toe Thompson (Jimmy Bennett), who just wants to make a few friends... until a mysterious rainbow-colored rock falls from the sky, hits him on the head and changes everything. The Rainbow Rock does Mr. Black’s BLACK BOX one better: it grants wishes to anyone who holds it.
Movie Review:
Robert Rodriguez is firmly back in family-friendly mode with his colourful kids fantasy "Shorts". Indeed, this is not the "Grindhouse" gore hound Rodriguez at work- this is the Rodriguez who gave us "Spy Kids" or "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D". Thanks to Rodriguez’s hyperactive imagination, there are mini-aliens, walking crocodiles, pterodactyls and a big slimy green booger monster all crammed into a frenetic 95-min affair.
As if knowing the attention span of his target demographic, Rodriguez deliberately breaks the story up into segments (or "Shorts" for short) and tosses them around in no particular order assisted by some appropriate on-screen graphics. Each segment is labelled an episode and "Shorts" surges forward, rewinds, pauses and then courses forward again skipping joyously from one episode to another.
It must’ve worked- since the kids around this reviewer in the cinema sat quite transfixed in their seats throughout the entire duration of the movie. Adults, though, be warned- Rodriguez’s similarly hyperactive zeal will likely be more irksome than entertaining. Just when you think you’ve pieced together two "Shorts" and are ready to find out what happens next, Rodriguez inserts another in-between and brings you back in time once more.
Were the shorts more consistent, his movie would probably be a less bumpy ride. But not every one of Rodriguez’s segments is equally inspired. Perhaps surprisingly, it is the shorts with the kids that are in fact more enjoyable. Certainly, the movie’s funniest bits come from one of the first episodes where three brothers, Loogie, Lug and Laser, first stumble upon the magical wishing rock. And in case you’re wondering, yes that’s the short where the most amusing 'tele-phone-nesis' part of the trailer hails from.
Not so interesting are Jon Cryer and Leslie Mann’s short as narrator Toe Thompson’s 'miscommunicated' parents, which also features James Spader’s power-hungry Black Box Incorporated chairman Mr Black. Cryer and Mann are both gifted comedic actors; but Rodriguez seems to have exhausted his imagination by the time he finished writing for the tykes, so much so that he relies on an excessive amount of physical comedy to elicit the laughs.
Ditto for William H. Macy’s germ-phobic short about an oversized boogie monster all too eager to devour his boogie master- however well-intentioned it may be at advising kids against picking their noses, there’s just not enough inventiveness to warrant its addition. The same can also be said of its messy and noisy climactic scene- the last short where every character previously in their own respective shorts finally comes together- that plays too frenziedly for its own good.
And if you’re counting, that means only 2 out of the 5 shorts (well 5 and a half, if you’re counting the one before the opening credits) are actually worth watching. Pity though because these two shorts are genuinely imaginative, possessing the same freshness and spontaneity that first made Rodriguez’s "Spy Kids" such a success. Not forgetting of course the very talented group of young actors Rodriguez has assembled for his adventure- most notably Trevor Gagnon as the kid who’s not so good at the art of wishing.
