Known as “The Extraordinary Adventure of Adele Blanc-Sec” in some territories, this movie is adapted from a comic adventure series written and illustrated by French comics artist Jacques Tardi. Set in the carefree world before World War I, Adele Blanc-Sec, an intrepid young reporter, will go to great lengths to achieve her goals, even sailing to Egypt to tackle mummies of all shapes and sizes. Meanwhile, in Paris, it’s panic attack as a 136 million-year-old pterodactyl egg on a shelf in the natural history museum has inexplicably hatched. The bird subjects the city to a reign of terror – but nothing fazes Adele Blanc-Sec, whose adventures reveal many more extraordinary surprises.
Movie Review :
This English-dubbed French movie is a feature film adaptation of a Franco-Belgian comic series ‘The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec’ by the famous Luc Besson (“The Fifth Element”). Follow the French’s answer to Hollywood’s Indiana Jones female counterpart in her adventures beyond the Egyptian desert and the lovely city of France.
The outgoing Adele (Louise Bourgoin of “Le Petit Nicolas”) is a writer and explorer, and after successfully publishing her latest book, she hastens out to look for the mummy of Pharaoh Ramses’ physician. With a faith that the mummy might hold a key to bring her younger sister back from a hopeless comatose state. Adele engages the help from Professor Menard (Phillipe Nahon), an expert in summoning the spirits from the realm of the dead to assist her with her cause. However, just like in any movie, there are definitely trials one after another to prevent Adele from doing things her way including a thorough pursuit by investigating officer Inspector Caponi, a young museum assistant’s romantic chase and a nemesis named Dieuleveult, who would do anything to get Adele out of the picture.
Luc Besson is known to have a wicked sense of humour and it can definitely be seen from the narration and the wonderful, notable characters that however small will serve their purpose in the movie. You will find yourself falling in love with the revived pterodactyl, the mummy Patmosis who would absolutely win the ‘World’s Most Friendliest and Caring Undead’ title if there ever is one and other supporting human characters, who played their roles ridiculously flawless. The cinematography and music score of “Adee: Rise Of The Mummy” are well brought up, nothing less to be expected from the brilliant Besson. Overall, despite the rather unfamiliar cast and cliche plotline, Adele deserves a three and a half out of five for a brilliant performance as a feel good movie.
This light-hearted comedy adventure will definitely appeal to children as well as those who have a penchant for any Egyptian exploit and a love for prehistoric wonders given that one does not put too much thought on the scientific explanation of things. Just cast your logics aside before you walk into the cinema and prepare yourself for an out-of-this world escapade that will revive the innocent yearnings for adventure in your long-forgotten childhood. A gentle recommendation though, do keep a lookout for a cameo of another renowned legend in the movie and stay seated as the credits start to appear for there will be an additional scene that will tickle your funny bone!
