After her boyfriend mysteriously leaves her with little explanation, grad student Sara Quinn is left looking for answers as to what went wrong. Directing all her energies into her anthropological dissertation, Sara conducts a series of interviews with men in an effort to uncover the secret thoughts that drive their behavior. As she records the astonishing and disquieting experiences of various subjects, Sara discovers much more about men and herself than she bargained for.

PARK CITY -- "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men" is one hell of a date movie. A surgical examination of the male psyche based on David Foster Wallace's book and written and directed by John Krasinski, there is plenty of food for thought and argument. A savvy distributor could stir up enough controversy for a select theatrical run before the film settles into a healthy ancillary afterlife.

Not since "In the Company of Men" has the male gender been so ruthlessly portrayed on screen. Taking Wallace's chapter-by-chapter interviews and cutting them into interwoven fragments, Krasinski (best known for his role in NBC's "The Office") has managed to create an unconventional narrative flow. Ingeniously structured and beautifully acted, the film at times is a bit clinical but never less than compelling.

Krasinski has added a female character, an academic played by Julianne Nicholson, who interviews a cross-section of men about their relationships with women. Most of them don't have a clue, but their deceit and manipulation are so clever and deep-seated it's like watching a car wreck on the side of the road: You can't take your eyes off of it.

It's somewhat simplistic to say that all men are this terrible, but it makes for better storytelling. The interviews start on a lighthearted note and progress to some nasty revelations about what men are really capable of. Sometimes the interviewees appear in an antiseptic room talking into a microphone, and sometimes the events they're describing are dramatized.

There's all sorts of crazy stuff, like the guy who for some unknown reason is compelled to shout "victory for the forces of democratic freedom" just before he has an orgasm. Or the one who breaks up with five different women with the same line.

Then things start to get darker. Bobby Cannavale plays a man with one arm who knows how to use his affliction for sympathy and then close in for the kill. On another occasion, Sara (Nicholson) overhears brash businessman Christopher Meloni describing to his friend Denis O'Hare what happened when he hooked up with a despondent woman abandoned by her boyfriend at the airport.

An inspired set piece has Frankie Faison visiting the men's room where his father made a career out of servicing the needs of white men, and explaining how the disgust he felt about his father informed his whole being.

The actors all work at a high level, and their monologues using Wallace's precise language literally feels like a class in acting. Timothy Hutton is suitably smarmy as Sara's professor, but Krasinski turns in the most devastating performance to climax the film. He's Sara's ex-boyfriend and her intellectual equal who fashions an elaborate rationale for why he cheated on her with a woman for which he had nothing but contempt. It's a chilling moment to which Sara responds with icy silence.

For the most part, the film is more cerebral than emotional, and the denseness of the material makes the brief 72-minute running time feel like more than enough. Editor Rich Fox has done a splendid job giving momentum to a story that could have been shapeless, and John Bailey's photography puts the action in sharp focus, the better to see the deeds done.

It's not every day that you get to watch a film about betrayal, carnal desire and the supposed intrinsic nature of men to think below the waist -- all at 8:30 in the morning. But on Tuesday, as the rest of the world tuned in to see a new president take the oath, myself and a half-asleep Sundance crowd shuffled into the Racquet Club theater to see John Krasinski's "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men."

By the end of the film, I considered my admission price of sleep and historical perspective well worth it.

Obviously, most people know Krasinski for his work on "The Office," and your first thought as you watch "Interviews" is that he's a looooong way from Jim Halpert. But while this pensive, somewhat nihilistic "In the Company of Men"-like exploration into the darker aspects of the male mind will undoubtedly scare away some segment of his core audience, fans of the NBC show aren't your typical shiny happy sitcom lovers. For those who simply enjoy smart entertainment -- and are daring enough to consider great achievements in highly-varied genres -- "Office" and "Interviews" will seem on the same level.

Adapting David Foster Wallace's 1999 collection of short stories, Krasinski proves himself to be a talented writer/director. Adding in a character named Sara (played perfectly by Julianne Nicholson), the film version has the graduate student attempting to find the reasons behind her recent dumping by talking to various men about their sexual taboos, formative experiences, and reasons for behaving badly.

When "Interviews" is finished with you, what you'll remember are the stories that touch you most. Some are funny, others sad -- and a few simply don't work. But the most impressive thing about Krasinski's direction is his self-assured ability to know when it's time to mix in visual elements, and when it's best to simply point a camera at a good storyteller and let the actor speak.

My personal favorites? One man speaks of being ashamed of his father -- a lowly bathroom attendant -- while we see a younger version of the father taking great pride handing towels to the privileged, tending to their needs as if he's a maitre d' at a fine hotel. Another standout has "Law & Order" star Christopher Meloni sharing a coffee with a friend and telling a story about a woman he picked up at the airport -- as he, his friend and the coffee cups keep popping up in the background of the story, looking on at this large-breasted babe like Scrooge and the Ghost of Christmas Past.

Other interviews -- like Will Forte's laundry list of what he loves about women, and Michael Cerveris' tale of dealing with his father's rage -- aren't quite as memorable. When you find yourself stuck watching one of the less-compelling interviews, the film can drag a bit -- and the soundtrack doesn't help as it makes you feel like you're trapped in the bohemian coffee shop from hell, with Maynard G. Krebs working the bongos.

Glimpsed briefly but mentioned throughout the film, Krasinski finally shows up on-camera for the film's big finale: A powerful scene that has him explaining his reasons to Nicholson for dumping her. In a film full of a-holes, the charismatic actor has no problem casting himself as the king of the scumbags. All we can do is admire Krasinski's skill with the complicated monologue, marvel over his impressive filmmaking debut -- and hope that sweet Pam Beesly has enough sense to stay far, far away from this guy.

Pretty to look at but largely vacuous, Spanish helmer Isabel Coixet’s romantic drama "Map of the Sounds of Tokyo" plays like a perfume ad without a product. The Tokyo-set yarn about a Japanese hit-femme who falls for a Spanish man she’s supposed to whack reps a vague cross between "Nikita" and "Last Tango in Paris," but without the former’s kinetic action or the latter’s resonance. Admittedly, "Tokyo’s" softcore sex scenes smoke, which might just help pic map out niche distribution in some territories, but critical support will be thin on the ground, judging by the boos that greeted the Cannes press showing."Map of the Sounds of Tokyo" delivers a major disappointment after Coixet’s underrated Philip Roth adaptation "Elegy," which seemed to herald the arrival of a new, tougher-minded vigor in her direction. Instead, the latest pic, this time written entirely by the helmer herself, sees Coixet returning to the excessively precious, cod-melancholy tone that marred her earlier pic "The Secret Life of Words."Critical goodwill extended toward the helmer for her patchy if effective breakout arthouse drama "My Life Without Me" won’t be so forthcoming this time round. The story here is told via ponderous, would-be poetic narration in Japanese by an unnamed sound recordist (Min Tanaka), who explains how he has a chaste relationship with a mysterious woman named Ryu (stunning Rinko Kikuchi from "Babel"). Ryu does menial but cinematically picturesque work in Tokyo’s fish market, so, she explains later, she doesn’t have to think. The fact that she has a big, stylishly furnished if minimalist apartment that a fish-market-worker’s salary could never afford, always wears slinky black clothes, and in her free time cleans graves and looks sad all adds up to the revelation that she’s a hitwoman. Ryu’s latest assignment is to kill Spanish wine-shop owner David (Sergi Lopez, "Pan’s Labyrinth") on the behalf of a businessman (Takeo Nakahara) whose daughter Midori supposedly committed suicide over David .Instead of just killing David in a crowded street and running off like a proper assassin would, Ryu packs her piece in a dainty handbag (clothes and accessory porn will rep one selling point for femme auds), goes to meet him in his store and is instantly charmed by fact that he recognizes her as a woman who knows her wine. Before you can say "Tampopo," slurps of ramen lead to a different kind of slurping in a love-hotel room fashioned to look like a Paris subway car. Soon after, Ryu offers to pay the client back his money with interest so she doesn’t have to slay David. It’s all really rather silly, but one thing that can be said in Coixet’s defense is that she knows how to tap into the erotic fantasies of some female viewers. Although Lopez’s alarmingly hirsute chest might put off some, his David is almost the perfect arthouse stud monkey: He has a nice bourgeois job that requires refinement and connoisseurship, but is muy macho and assertive in the bedroom, and loves cunnilingus to boot.If only the film showed the character enjoying lengthy discussions of feelings and demonstrating skill at fixing household appliances, he could be to specialist-film-loving women viewers today what Beatrice Dalle in "Betty Blue" was to arty college boys in the 1980s.Although Lopez and Kikuchi have great chemistry and both have proved their acting chops elsewhere, something’s gone badly awry here so that every time they open their mouths — to talk, instead of snog — they sound stilted and flat. It doesn’t help that neither is speaking their first language, but largely it’s the pretentious of the script that fails them. The movie looks nice, courtesy of Jean Claude Larrieu’s lensing (Coixet herself once again takes a credit as camera operator and this is one job she’s indisputably good at). But as with fellow Cannes 2009 competitor Gaspar Noe’s "Enter the Void" also proves, use of Tokyo’s photogenic, color-saturated locations will only get a film so far if it doesn’t have something interesting to say. Sound design credited to Fabiola Ordoyo is good enough but not quite as intricate or nuanced as one would expect given the prominence of sound in both title and screenplay. An erotic thriller about a Japanese assassin who falls in love with her Spanish target, Isabel Coixet’s "Map of the Sounds of Tokyo" is "Nikita" reincarnated with Tokyo eyes. Glossy cinematography and a Wong Kar Wai wannabe soundtrack conspire to rehash some cliched images of the Japanese metropolis, with little that Chris Marker, Wim Wenders, Jean-Pierre Limosin or Sofia Coppola haven’t done before."Map" will fulfill a certain semi-artsy, mostly European crowd’s taste for upmarket exotica with its suggestive representation of a demure oriental beauty’s sexual flowering under the experienced touch of a hot-blooded Hispanic. With 2007 Oscar-nominee Rinko Kikuchi ("Babel") making a bold impression as the assassin, a Japanese release is also likely, even if the corny dialogue may be lost in translation. What’s a cool chick with movie star mascara doing slicing slabs of tuna in Tokyo’ Tsukiji fish market? An elderly sound recorder (Min Tanaka) is too polite to probe when he befriends taciturn Ryu (Rinko Kikuchi) at the ramen museum. Anyways, he’s only enamored of the slurping sounds she makes when she eats, so he’s content to meet for casual meals and visits to anonymous graves. One learns of her other vocation through a montage of hit jobs reminiscent of John Woo’s "killer" films.Ryu gets an assignment from corporate CEO Nagara (Takeo Nakahara) to take out David (Sergi Lopez) a Spanish wine merchant who dated his daughter Midori. Nagara blames David for her suicide — her dying words scribbled in blood intimating the film’s theme. Ryu approaches her target through wine-tasting, but also gets a taste of his incredibly hairy chest in a love hotel room furnished like a train carriage. Then, she does what is considered a big "no, no" in the business, and the rest is noir history. The potboiler plot (which has almost no action for a film about contract killing) and pseudo-Zen musings on life’s inherent heartache exist only to underscore the steamy softcore sex scenes, which are well shot but interrupted by gag-worthy dialogue like "Sit here, on top, in my face, till you warm up."Kikuchi manages to imbue Ryu’s cool, placid exterior with some vulnerability that makes her more human. Less likeable is Lopez, whose portfolio of villainous roles (organ trafficker in "Dirty Pretty Things", wife-batterer in "Solo Mia" and Fascist torturer in "Pan’s Labyrinth") casts an aggressive air over his image as a romantic lover. And despite his protestations of love for Midori, there is no back story to their relationship to help one make sense of his ensuing affair with Ryu. Even more disturbing is Coixet’s fascination with portraying talented, beautiful women who offer up themselves to validate a conflicted older man (already a subject of her "Elegy.")Given the film’s title, one would expect some dramatic arc or conceptual idea to issue from the sound recorder, or a special treatment of sound or music. Not so. Aside from narrating the film, neither his role nor his recordings of Ryu end up having much bearing on the plot. The sound does not particularly stand out, and the music is a cafe compilation of Latin mood pieces and nostalgic Japanese songs that sometimes borders on kitsch — like the Japanese rendition of "La Vie en rose" heard during a smooch scene. The choice of locations — from a club serving sushi on a nude blonde to traditional diners, from the music mecca of Shimokitazawa to a small shrine nestled against autumn leaves, from pachinko parlors to karaoke cells — merged with glittering helicopter shots of Tokyo’s skyline and night traffic, sticks to the beaten tourist path that underlines the film’s pretentious but shallow style.

His life is further complicated by his search for the 'one', a woman he is sure will liberate him from his long addiction to orgy fantasies. Both of these pursuits are somehow connected to God, who may or may not be a stick figure, and Baxter's lesbian roommate, who may or may not be imaginary. Employing live action, animation, and experimental story techniques to explore existential, professional, and sexual crisis, ORGIES AND THE MEANING OF LIFE promises to be one of the more unique movie going experiences you will ever have

Hopelessly addicted to orgy fantasies and creatively stifled as he attempts to complete his book about a lonely stick figure seeking a portal into the three-dimensional world, eccentric aspiring author named Baxter Goode finds his quest to achieve personal and professional fulfillment continually stifled by his search for the woman he believes will finally liberate him from his distracting sexual hang-ups. Baxter's father is a best-selling Christian author who believes his son's immortal soul to be at risk, and even Baxter himself seems to wrestle with this belief as he attempts to work his personal problems out with God. Not even Baxter's lesbian roommate seems capable of helping him sort through his pressing problems with women, but then again she may be nothing more than another vivid figment of his overactive imagination
