Air Doll (Kûki ningyô) Japanese Film Synopsis :
Watch movie Story : An "air doll" (played by Du-na Bae) suddenly develops human feelings one day. Without her owner knowing, the air doll decides to walk around town. She then falls in love with Junichi, whom she spots while walking the aisles of a video rental store. She then starts to date Junichi and eventually works at the video shop. Everything seems to be going perfect for the air doll until something unexpected happens to her.
Air Doll (Kûki ningyô) Hollywood Movie Review : Air Doll is a rather sad and delicate story about the loss of innocence, urban alienation, loneliness, and what it means to be human. The film touches upon a theme of men treating women as mere sex objects, but it is in no way related to prostitution. The film is intended for mature audiences who can appreciate the issues raised by the director. Fans of Bae Doo-na will find a lot to like here, as the actress has done an admirable job portraying a sex doll come to life. She is in almost every frame, often in her birthday suit. A cast of supporting characters is introduced, but their stories only briefly touch the main plot line, and we do not get to spend significant time with any of them. It works as a perfect illustration of fleeting encounters with strangers in a big city. Korean actress Bae Doo-na is superb in Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda's latest film Air Doll. Shown at the Vancouver Film Festival, Air Doll is based on the Japanese manga The Pneumatic Figure of a Girl and tells the story of a life-size inflatable doll used as a sex object for a lonely waiter who finds a heart and becomes a real person.
The film is supported by the enchanting photography of Mark Lee Ping-bing who worked with Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wei in In the Mood for Love, and poetic images abound. When the film opens, Hideo (Itao Itsuji), returns from work as a waiter and begins a conversation about his day and everything seems normal until we discover that he is talking to a doll propped up in bed that he calls Nozomi, (the name of his former girl friend). Though she is a mannequin, he tells her about his life, gives her a bath, dresses her, and has sex with her each night.

About Her Brother (おとうと) Japanese Movie Review : The movie opens with news clips and other snippets of video tracing the years from Ginko's life. The "Otoko wa tsuraiyo" series was a fantasy, but "Ototo" is set in Japan today. Naturally, society turns a cold shoulder to the selfish ne'er-do-well Tetsuro. Still, Yamada does not abandon him. The director stands ready with happy final moments of life for Tetsuro, in which he is embraced by both the institution's generosity and the love of his family. It portrays society as it should be, and it's powerful enough to make audiences wince. Alongside the tale of a loving relationship between a sister and her brother, the film follows the relationship between divorced Koharu and carpenter Toru (played by Ryo Kase), a romance so pure to bring smiles to audiences and so typically Yamada. (By Tomomi Katsuta, Cultural News Department)
Commentary by film writer Mika Hosoya: The film has a resilience not seen in other films that simply manipulate audiences' emotions so that they feel "touched." The plot progresses according to expectations for the most part, but is still able to evoke rich feelings. Incorporating Koharu's cool world view was also effective. Commentary by film writer Yuji Takahashi: Distinctive expressions in dialogue and unique portrayals of relationships brings this film closer to the world of fantasy and formal beauty rather than contemporary drama. Indulging in a world where realities specific to Yamada's films reside, I laughed and cried to my heart's content.

Kazura Japanese Film Review : The odds of two brilliant Japanese comedies opening the same day are high but not impossible, somewhat like the odds of the same director (James Cameron) making two all-time worldwide box-office hits ("Titanic" and that other film about blue aliens). Both "Kazura" and "Boys on the Run" open Saturday and both are good, if in quite different ways. If you're a balding, lonely, middle-aged male, "Kazura" is more likely to hit home; if you're nerdy, clueless and dateless, it should be "Boys on the Run." If you're all of the above, get a life, brother, not a movie ticket. Kazura Japanese Hong Kong Film. The The Film Director by Renpei Tsukamoto.
Directed by Renpei Tsukamoto, from an essay collection by Shinya Kobayashi, "Kazura" could have easily become a one-joke comedy that plays like a stick of gum: Tasty start, flavorless finish. But Tsukamoto, a TV director whose credits include the late-night cult favorite "Jiko Keisatsu" ("Statute of Limitations Cop"), builds on his slight premise like a standup comic constructing a castle of laughter out of thin air — or rather sharp observations about everyday embarrassments. His hero is Moriyama (Masakazu Mimura), a salaryman employed by a home builder in the provinces who is transferred to Tokyo to work on a big project. Seeing this as a chance to change his image — particularly his thinning pate — he visits various wig/hair- replacement salons in the big city, where he is quoted outrageous prices for dubious products.
