In 20th Century Fox’s upcoming “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” sequel, older brothers appear to have the upper hand over their defenseless younger siblings. That means the deceitful Rodrick Heffley (Devon Bostick) is going to make life extremely difficult for our hero, Greg (Zachary Gordon), the wimpy kid.
“Rodrick Rules,” the second film adapted from Jeff Kinney’s bestselling “Wimpy Kid” series, opens in theaters this Friday, March 25. When Fox asked if I wanted to speak with Gordon, I deferred to my 7-year-old son, a devoted follower of Greg’s crazy adventures both on the page and on the screen. As he prepared to head off to school for the day, the 13-year-old Gordon telephoned and talked all things “Wimpy” with us.
Zachary Gordon: I did read the books before the audition. But I did want to make a movie out of Jeff’s books myself. It’s kind of interesting. Fox beat me to it.
Oh, you wanted to actually direct them yourself?
Yeah, I wanted to star in them, as well! But I only got one out of the two.
Are you playing around with film and trying to learn about directing?
Yes, I want to be a director when I get older. I used a Flip Camera on the “Wimpy Kid” set every once in a while. But I think I’m probably going to get my own video camera in like a year or something.
He also wonders if you keep your own diary?
I don’t, actually. The studio wanted me to keep one on the first movie, but I didn’t have enough time. Eventually I was getting so tied up with keeping up with the shoot, I figured I should just avoid it.
