A day after her public appearance, Tamil actor Ranjitha has launched a scathing attack on those whom she alleges attempted to tarnish her name. In an exclusive interview with DNA, she said she would not sit quiet until justice was done. She said she was traumatised by the events of the past eight months that had led to much misunderstanding among her fans and devotees of Nithyananda.
How will you see this issue out?
I was shooting for a Malayalam movie when the so-called sleaze video clippings were released by TV channels. Soon after the shoot, I went to the USA and many of my friends and well-wishers asked me not to return to India because they feared for my safety. But now that I am back I will not sit quiet until I get justice and bring the issue to its logical end. Now that I am back I will fight against all those people who tried to tarnish my name, as well as [Swami] Nithyananda’s.
How did all this start?
I met Lenin Karuppan on February 13 for the first time. This was the time he started blackmailing and threatening me. He told me he had some photos and videos of me that might harm my reputation. He regularly started calling me on my mobile and threatened that he would release the videos and photos.
He demanded a ransom of Rs60 crore initially. Later his agent, Sridhar, who claims to be a lawyer, approached [Swami] Nithyananda and his disciples. The demand was then brought down to Rs20 crore.
Four others soon joined them in the ransom demand. Initially, I did not expect it would take such a serious turn and I did not even bother about them. I did not even complain to the police as I was busy completing my film.
How did it all snowball?
On March 2, I was shocked when the videotapes were released to TV channels. I immediately contacted my family and lawyers to discuss the issue, but they pacified me stating that there was nothing incriminating in the videos. Before Lenin released the video CD, he, along with other bigwigs, threatened me that I would be involved in serious criminal cases.
Do you still feel threatened?
Yes. I am still under threat from these quarters. As for the names of these people, I have already given them to the court. Now I am planning to get private security for my safety as I have lost faith in the government, which did not come to my rescue.
Do you still feel abandoned?
Yes. I still feel there is nobody to support me. But I was forced to come out in public as I wanted to silence those who were piling up accusations against me. I have gathered courage to fight all misconceptions and tirades against me. Thankfully, I have a set of good lawyers who are working towards getting me justice.
