Season of the Witch Synopsis:
Season of the Witch is a supernatural thriller film. Nicolas Cage stars as a 14th century Crusader who returns with his comrade (Ron Perlman) to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague.
A beleaguered church, deeming sorcery the culprit of the plague, commands the two knights to transport an accused witch (Claire Foy) to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence.
A priest (Stephen Campbell Moore), a grieving knight (Ulrich Thomsen), an itinerant swindler (Stephen Graham) and a headstrong youth who can only dream of becoming a knight (Robert Sheehan) join a mission troubled by mythically hostile wilderness and fierce contention over the fate of the girl.
The film is currently shooting new scenes reported to be a prologue at the Korda Studios near Budapest.
Movie Review:
Atli Örvarsson, One of Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions composers, has scored about 4 major films recently (Vantage Point, Babylon A.D., Thick As Thieves, The Fourth Kind) and scoring “Season of the Witch” is quite an interesting project because it requires music with a sense of epic adventure and horror. As we know, Örvarsson has already gone through sort of things. For example, the using of dark-mood orchestra and chorus in a film called “Babylon A.D” and also the using of scary ambient music for a horror-thriller (and half documentary) film called “The Fourth Kind”. For the music instrument, you can expect “Remote Control Productions” sound which is synthesizer and orchestra combination (For the new composer, it will mostly be with synthesizer). However, Örvarsson has created some interesting pieces of music here which are the unique witch-liked female vocal and crazy bombard chorus. These are something new for Örvarsson and he really gets you in his way.
An opening track Behman gives you a main theme which is presented by electric violin as well as the vocal. It sounds cool but also spooky which I think it is a good beginning anyway. The next track Season of the Witch gives a second theme which is even more powerful & frightening than the first one. It really gives you a chill as female vocal rises before it returns to play the first theme and then follow with the bombard chorus. No doubt, there are some variations based on the second theme which is used effectively in Final Battle, The Cardinal, and The Plague. The track Road To Severac is very enjoyable and gives you the real sense of adventure, especially its first 3 minutes. In addition to the sense of adventure, there are some other good tracks you can simply enjoy such as Crossing The Bridge and Wolf Attack. These two tracks depend on heavy percussion and synthetic sound including a little bit of vocal as you can guess. However, they have successfully delivered the rhythm of excitement and terror which can be easily recognize. The longest track of the album 1235 A.D. gives you a sense of horror music. It won’t blow you mind with a silence and immediate bang but it will make you cramped with ambient music instead. Furthermore, this track also includes the witch-liked female vocal and bombard chorus I have mentioned above and you will be stunned by them. Anna & Kay is the only highlight for the soft music you can get the whole album. It is still based on themes but the way it is presented is just smooth and relaxing a sense of drama within. For the weak side of this album, there are some moments of laziness you might feel and want to skip. Those tracks are Felson & Kay Fight which is full of percussions in Örvarsson style. I know that it supposes to work well, however, it is just too short and quite boring because there is nothing more than percussion. The other track is Trenches which may sound creepy because of ambient music but it is too simple to be a track for me.
Movie Soundtrack Review:
This is a review of the motion picture score Season Of The Witch by Atli Örvarsson.
“It is quite an interesting project because it requires music with a sense of epic adventure and horror.”
An adventure film set in the 14th century tells the story of two knight, Behman (Nicolas Cage) and Felson (Ron Pearlman), who are assigned by the cardinal to bring a girl, who is believed to be the witch and causes the deadly plague in the city, to one faraway place where her power will be demolished. Of course, their mission is not going to be an easy trip when all the dark forces from the other side are trying to stop them too.
