Movie Plot Summary:
In this contemporary re-imagining of Jonathan Swift's classic tale, Lemuel Gulliver is a perpetual underachiever and wannabe travel writer at a New York newspaper. When he finally makes an effort to actually venture out of the city to write a travel piece, a storm-tossed voyage lands him on an island inhabited by tiny folks called Liliputians. After a rocky beginning, the gargantuan Gulliver becomes an inspiration to his new six-inch-tall friends. He brings them modern-day wonders like a PDA and music video games - while they help him learn that it's how big you are on the inside that counts.

‘Gulliver’s Travels’ Movie Review:
I’ve noticed that Jack Black’s been making the pr circuit for his ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ movie (he produced it too), but actually talking about the film itself seems to be more of an afterthought to him. That’s how I felt watching this film. The entire thing feels like everything about it was an afterthought. Especially the dreaded tacking on 3D to a 2D film which doesn’t do anything for it in the least except pull a few more box office bucks from unsuspecting folk.
20th Century Fox has moved ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ four times this year which speaks volumes. It was originally slated for June 4, 2010, but obviously the studio had no faith in the film and pushed it around until it landed on Christmas Eve, and then suddenly to Christmas Day when no other big movies were set.
I waited a day before writing this since I’ve had to watch a few crappy films in a row and that’s gets frustrating, especially since there are so many great films out there just not getting the attention they deserve so today we’re putting up several reviews of films to check out on DVD. Thankfully, there’s ‘True Grit’ coming so people will have a great alternative to this attempt at a family film. Jack Black seems to do much better in films where he plays a supporting character over a starring one. ‘School Of Rock‘ was an exception, but it’s been the only one for him. I noticed in a recent interview Black did where he said that he had not seen any of the previous films of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ so he could get a fresh take on it. As with any remake (or adaptation they’re calling it), it can help to check out what other people have done so as to avoid making similar mistakes or finding a fresh spin to give it. The spin that’s put on this one just doesn’t work and is so beneath an actress like Emily Blunt or comedian Billy Connolly.
Black plays Lemuel Gulliver, a frumpy mailroom clerk at a prestigious newspaper who has those huge pie in the sky fantasises and dreams, but when it comes to actually fulfilling them, falls very short (this is pretty much the by the number Jack Black type part). Trying to impress and get the attention of travel editor Darcy (Amanda Peet), he quickly signs on for a travel assignment in the Bermuda Triangle. As expected, a freak storm hits, and he winds up in the land of Lilliput where he becomes a giant hero to its tiny citizens.
Hoping to appeal to everyone, ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ throws every possible scenario into the mix which only makes it feel very desperate. Kids might enjoy seeing a giant trouncing around a tiny little kingdom, but it wears rather quickly, and throwing two romantic subplots into the mix (along with a Transformers mention) just feels like the filmmakers knew they had problems and figured that by throwing everything against the wall, something would stick. The only thing that stuck was the bad taste of this film with all of us.
