Spider-Man to Introduce Peter Parker's Biological Parents

The Spider-Man origin story is one we've all heard told too many times, in many different types of media. It is as ingrained in our brains as the necessity to eat and sleep, having been sold through in many different comic books, several different forms of animation, old Saturday night movies from the 70s, and even on The Electric Company. Sam Raimi created the perfect Spider-Man origin story with his 2002 movie. It's one tale, frankly, that doesn't need to be told again. At least, not this soon. Yet, that isn't stopping Sony or director Marc Webb from heading back to this familiar stomping ground with their as-yet Untitled Spider-Man Reboot (known in production circles as Spider-Man 2.0.

Once thought to kick-off with Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) already empowered with super human spider-strength, Spider-Man 2.0 will once again be retelling the story of how Parker came to be the superhero we all know and love today. Though, Marc Webb and his writing team are taking a slightly different approach by introducing, for the first time on film, Peter's biological parents Richard and Mary into the cinematic mythology.

In October, we reported that Sony was holding a casting call in search of a boy between the ages of 4 and 6 to play a young Peter Parker. What's Playing has now revealed that we will be seeing this young Peter with his parents, who, according to official Marvel lore, were government spies who died in a plane crash when Peter was still an infant. According to The Untold Tales of Spider-Man, Richard and Mary were both agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. Which, as you know, is headed by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in the upcoming The Avengers movie.

It is unclear if Richard and Mary Parker's ties to the government will play into the storyline of Spider-Man 2.0, or how that information will come to affect Parker's transformation into Spider-Man. It is unlikely Spider-Man 2.0 will tie into the storyline of The Avengers, as one is being release by Sony and the other is being released by rival studio Disney. It may hint at that, though, as both are of course Marvel Studio properties.

While Sony was originally looking to cast a boy between the ages of 4 and 6, they have now changed their search to that of a boy between the ages of 6 and 9. It is speculated that audiences will finally learn how Peter came to be in the protective services of Aunt May (Sally Field) and Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen).

There is no word on who will be playing Peter Parker's biological parents. But if Sony and Marc Webb want to make fans happy, they'll cast Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, as these parental characters will most likely be nothing more than cameos. Seeing these two actors in this remake/reboot would certainly make us happy. How about you?

Untitled Spider-Man Reboot comes to theaters July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen. The film is directed by Marc Webb.
