SYNOPSIS:
Welcome is an emotionally affecting drama about intersecting lives, unlikely friendships, and the hope of new beginnings. Bilal (Firat Ayverdi), a 17-year-old Kurdish refugee, has spent the last three months of his life traveling across Europe, in an attempt to reunite with his girlfriend who recently emigrated to England. But his journey comes to an abrupt end when he is stopped on the French side of the Channel. Having decided to swim across, Bilal goes to the local swimming pool to train. It is here he meets Simon (Vincent Lindon), a middle-aged swimming instructor, who is privately reeling in turmoil as he dreads an imminent divorce from his wife (Audrey Dana). Despite their differences, the two men discover that they have much in common, and a strong bond emerges between them. Simon decides to take Bilal under his wing, realizing that he too must risk everything to reach the other side of happiness.

Movie Reviews:
Philippe Lioret's film is a superb, personal account of one man's protest at the inhumanity of the system. Though the word 'politics' is never mentioned in this tremendously powerful tale, Welcome bristles with indignation at the treatment of desperate people.
A Swim Coach is an Unlikely Mentor
Bilal (Firat Ayverdi), a 17-year-old Kurdish refugee, is determined to get to England, to be reunited with his sweetheart. His naïve, headstrong optimism unends the stagnating life of Frenchman, Simon Calmat (Vincent Lindon).
Simon and his resigned, thin-lipped face teach swimming in a local pool and he quickly divines the fact that his young immigrant pupil is preparing to swim the English channel. Stung by his soon-to-be-ex-wife, Marion's (Audrey Dana) taunt that he stood by and said nothing when the 'illegals' were thrown out of a supermarket for upsetting the locals. 'Do I need to buy you a history book?' asks Marion, who feeds many refugees at a Calais soup kitchen. Simon responds by allowing Bilal and a friend to stay for a few days.
It is then that he in his innocent, and we, in our horror, discover the extent of the 'upset' the refugees cause. Simon is hauled before the local police and warned that aiding Bilal and his friend is illegal.
Uncomfortable Comparisons, Lest We Forget
There are disturbing signs everywhere of a return to the earlier hinted Nazism. A neighbour's double take at the arrival of Bilal and his friend at Simon's house one night, is only a hint of the trouble to come. Simon drives past what looks like a man being bashed by a gang of thugs, until he sees that the perpetrators have emerged from a phalanx of police paddy wagons.
