Synopsis:
Dev falls in love with Ragini, a spunky classical dancer who is as unconventional as him. They get married and he takes up his new post in Lal Maati, a small town in northern India. A town where the word of law is not the police but Beera, a tribal who has over the years, shifted the power equation of the place from the ruling to the have-nots of the area.
Dev knows, that the key to bringing order to any place is to vanquish the big fish; in this case - Beera. In one stroke Dev manages to rip open Beera's world, and set in motion a chain of events which will claim lives, change fortunes.
Beera, injured but enraged hits back starting a battle that draws Dev, Beera and Ragini into the jungle. The jungle which is dense, confusing, scary. And in this journey they must comfort their own truth. A journey which will test their beliefs, convictions and emotions. Emotions, which are as scary and confusing as the forest. The forest becomes the battleground. The battle between good and evil; between Dev and Beera; between Ram and Raavan.
But when the lines dividing good and evil are blurring fast whose side will you take. When hate turns to love and the good start looking evil, which side will you battle for? Love is a battle that nobody wins but everyone must fight. Even this Raavan.
Jointly distributed by Madras Talkies and Big Pictures, ‘Raavan’ unfolds on the screens from June 2010.

Does our understanding change when we look from the opponent's perspective...?
The bond between the hunter and the Hunted between the Captor and the Captive seems to be a bond of do or die... The tension between opposites often seems so electric, that it isolates them from the rest of the world, leaving just the two - All alone...

Aishwarya as Ragini In Movie Raavan:
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan aka Mani Ratnam’s modern-age Sita oozes grace and expressions which sets her quite apart from her earlier films. A role that had been challenging, Aishwarya has proved the true sportive spirit of an ideal actor – acting for both Hindi and Tamil version.
In ‘Raavan’ Aishwarya plays the character Ragini, who is a classical dancer and marries police officer Dev Pratap Sharma (played by South star Vikram). Ragini becomes a victim of Naxalite leader Beera Munda (Abhishek Bachchan) who abducts her to avenge his anger on Dev for uncovering his unlawful deeds.
Calling her role extremely challenging, Aishwarya revealed that to shoot the film in Hindi and Tamil at the same time was quite a task. At the same time she remarks that the experience had been so wonderful that if the director asks her, she is ready to do it all over again. Yeah, it was truly a terrific experience we say – for they had shot in dense forest, with snakes as the spectators and nearly 300 leeches to enjoy the team’s blood. Says Ash amusingly, "All in all, it was an incredibly original experience. It was almost like being on a 'Fear Factor' show."

News:
Yesterday, the 63rd Cannes Film Festival had a taste of true desi flavour with the presence of ‘Raavan’ team. A trailer of Mani Ratnam’s bilingual Raavan/Raavanan was screened to the media at the fest.
The event was attended by the lead stars of the movie, Vikram, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. The actress turned up in a beautiful black saree, looking all Indian and quite different from her western avatars she wore earlier.
Amit Khanna of Reliance Big Pictures, which has produced the films along with Madras Talkies, described Mani Ratnam as arguably the best Indian director living today, and said that he and the rest believed in taking such rare movies to the global audience.
Suhasini Mani Ratnam, the film’s co-producer and dialogue writer for the Tamil version, said that the film would help “Us understand the grey parts that all of us have in us…None of us is completely white or black”.
Heaping laurels on Grammy-Oscar winner A R Rahman, who had scored music for the film, she said that the music maestro’s work merged beautifully with the story. “In fact, the music accentuated picture. Songs have a great role to play. They do take the plot forward,” she said.
Vikram and Abhishek told the media that their roles in the film were most challenging, most difficult and most stimulating. It was physically exhausting, the actors said. Aishwarya said that apart from the intricacies of essaying the Hindi and Tamil heroine all at the same time, the inhospitable jungle terrain where they shot the film posed its own hazards.
Loosely based on Indian epic Ramayana, both the Hindi and Tamil versions of 'Raavan' are reported to open in 58 countries in June.
Abhishek and Aishwarya were also there for the screening of ‘Outrage’ that was held at the Palais des Festivals. Before that they both along with Vikram had attended the photocall of ‘Raavan’ at the Salon Diane.
