At the End of Daybreak Hong Kong Film Review :
This is the eleventh film I saw at the 14th Pusan International Film Festival.
From Malaysian indie director Ho Yuhang, this film features less languid pacing and editing (it is at about the same level as the slowest of HK movies), but characters still lurrrve to talk. It is also very HK in the sense that the characters, or at least some of them, seem to be always annoyed with each other and whine and complain to each other about it. It also features two HK actors in its main cast (including veteran TVB actress Wai Ying Hung), which explains why the quality of performance in this film is markedly better than other local films we've come across.
Unlike most Malaysian independent films, this one has a clear story, though it takes its time to reveal itself. Essentially it's a story about a middle class Chinese girl who couples up with a working class Chinese boy, andthe film spends a good amount of time setting up their separate lives, their separate set of friends and family. What amuses me slightly, is seeing the Miri schoolgirl fight (almost) play out in a scene when a bunch of girls confront the main schoolgirl character.
By the way, except for one classroom scene, the school does not seem to have any students.
The choices of shots and framing makes sense for once, and we don't see a lot of pointless long takes aimed away from the main action, or extraneous, ambiguous insert shots that try to mean something we don't care about. This time it feels like more attention was paid to story telling. The cinematography in general (including the lighting) is more assured, and this time it seems that aMalaysian filmmaker has discovered the advantages of the dolly shot. (How much of the crew is from HK??)
Bear in mind, though, what I'm saying is relative.
The acting even from the Malaysian actors is, thankfully, not over the top. The script however seems to like giving them lots of lame jokes to tell. Most of the scenes make sense, except for one sudden and uncalled for scene of domestic violence late inthe film . Uncalled for because it came from nowhere, didn't seem to follow any emotional build-up or any consequence of someone's action, and didn't seem to affect following scenes either. (Otherwise it would have been an utterly effective and compelling dramatic moment.) There is one car accident scene which I thought was pretty well executed, as in it didn't come across as fake. And there is a surprising cameo involving (among others) Pn Yasmin which is sort of cute ... put a smile on my face, it did.
I noted down on my notes that "the problem with art films is that they never want to engage with the audience". This one isn't really an art film and thus fares better than most, and is likely to be Ho Yuhang's most accessible film ever....
